All in the Family

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

Have you look at all the newly retired racing greyhound available for adoption on the NLGA website?  Have you noticed that there are currently a lot of greyhounds available for adoption with a true family connections to other recently adopted NLGA greyhounds?  No, take a look...!

There is Bay who is the full sister to Ann.  There is Nike who is the full brother to Vincent.  And there is Smitty who is the son to Star!  Pretty neat stuff!

And how about this ... you are going to like this story ... we recently received a note that added another level to the family connection for one of our available greyhounds!

Kodie is looking for his forever home!

From the NLGA Facebook page, it started something like this...

This was pretty neat!  How often do you see something like this?  And so we got in touch ... and thus the greyt story that follows!  Enjoy!

"We adopted Fay through REGAP 4 years ago. She was a Betsy Ross daughter (who is in the greyhound Hall of Fame), so quite special already.

Fay at REGAP's running field at age 8.5

Fay was always a joy to have around - she was a dog that had a great sense of humor! We had four dogs and 2 of them were older so I talked my husband into getting another dog. I decided to see if I could find a pup from one of my old girls and saw that Fay still had 3 youngsters on the race track, 2 brindles (Kodie and Nitro) and a red fawn - Merlin.

Merlin

I fell in love with Merlin's picture and contacted the adoption group that works with the track where Merlin was at the time.  REGAP and the other group worked to get Merlin to me when he came off the track 5 months later and I picked him up in Indianapolis, fresh off the track.  He was a hoot - he came into our home and acted as if he had dropped into Wonderland - all those girls just for him!  Three days later he was neutered and his hard training began. Not by me, but by our alpha female and his mom, Fay.

I don't think she recognized him as her puppy - that would be a stretch - but we are sure she knew his scent. Fay died 10 months after we got Merlin, but until she died she allowed him to sleep next to her - no other dog was allowed that close.

Mom and son; Fay and Merlin

Merlin is in someways very similar to his mother, he is as gentle and as loving as she was. His tail wags a lot - helicopter tail. He has many of her traits but he has others that must be from his father - the way he cocks his head and his sensitive nature. We also have a female that is a sister to Merlin (same father, different mom) and she is also sensitive and cautious.

I could go on and on about him, Merlin is an absolute sweetheart, he is very much loved and I hope that Kodie finds a home that will love him as much as we love our Merlin."

A cool family connection, wouldn't you say?!  A neat opportunity for Kodie and his future forever family to be able to connect and share stories about his brother and mother!

So, what has Kodie been up to in his foster home while he waits to find his forever family?  Toys!

Kodie and "joojoo"

Kodie loves "joojoo", his stuffed animal and often walks around the house carrying it in his mouth :-)
