PLAYfully Yours... Life as a Baby Brother!

It's been two whole months since I came home to my new family and it sure didn't take me long to discover how much FUN being the baby of the family can be! My Day (he's my big brother) says I get away with too many things because I'm the baby but I just say I'm having lots and lots of fun!

Right away I discovered how much fun it is to figure out which toys are my Days absolute favourites so I can take them from him and hoard them... I usually don't sleep in my kennel but sometimes I do like to take quick naps cozied in with all the toys I 'collect' from my Day.

Seasons According to Day

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

Today's guest blog post comes to us from our northern friends in Canada!

Poor Day is getting a little annoyed with the seasons taking soooooo long to change... I thought we might share his seasonal views on the blog since I'm sure he isn't the only Greyhound dreaming of summer days. :)

Life with a Greyhound

Life With A Greyhound... (our personal list of FAQ's)

In only a matter of days, on December 16th, it will have been one whole year since that snow-stormy morning when Day stole our hearts and we became a family. We've had an incredible year and I am grateful for every single minute we have with this boy of absolute sweetness and love!

Being a Greyhounds mama, I've found, is not for the hopelessly shy. Or, maybe it is... maybe it's actually the best thing to have finally forced me out of my protective shell.  I have talked to more people in this past year than I maybe have in my entire life before adopting Day, but, I love that people are curious! I love that people are fascinated and excited to learn about Retired Racing Greyhounds in search of loving homes. And, I especially love that people want to meet Day and how they are thoroughly surprised and delighted at how he immediately leans into everyone he meets for a cuddly introduction. Days heart is open and has, in turn, opened me up to so many conversations with people I otherwise would never have had.

I'm Adopted

Hi, Everybody!

My name is Day and I'm adopted! I was adopted, through Northern Lights Greyhound Adoption, by my parents on December 16, 2013.

My mama has been searching for pictures of me during my racing career but has had no luck at all in that area so my story shall begin here.....

After I had run my last race as a professional athlete, I retired from my life at the track and went to live with an incredible foster family who all helped me learn the beginnings of life in a house. They all loved me and cared for me just like I was one of their own and I know they will always be a big part of who I am. These are some pictures my foster parents took of me and there's even one of me with my foster brother and sister!

Puppies at Play!

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers,

Below are a couple videos from two 11-month old litter-mates caught in the act of playing together.

Please keep in mind these two ruffians have already gone for THREE walks, each longer than a mile in length. Lots of puppy energy!

Then, after a round of play,,,?  A moment of rest, or so it seems.  "Mom, he is touching me!"

Kiki Goes to Mount Evans

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

Our friend Kiki is back with another hiking adventure from her new home state of Colorado!  Enjoy!

---------------

Another hiking adventure for Kiki!  To Mount Evans we go...  Mt. Evans is the highest paved road in North America at 14,265' above sea level.  We traveled a beautiful scenic byway called Squaw Pass, taking many little hiking breaks along the way ... Kiki loved every minute of the adventure, smiled and at some fantastic grass!

Off to Mount Evans; Kiki enjoying the fresh mountain air and watching wildlife.

Hiking with Kiki

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

We recently got a note in the Dog Blog inbox from Kiki!  Kiki, her Mom, and her Aunt recently moved to Denver.  They wanted to share their most recent adventure with us!

------------

We are loving it out here in Denver!  Went for our first hike this past Sunday in Bear Creek.  Kiki loved it and was the leader of our pack!  :)

Someone found a really big spine/hip girdle on top of the boulder.

Kiki leading the way...

Didn't know if we were going up further ... Kiki tackled the rocks as if stepping stones!

Near the top.

Happy girl on the trail.

That sure was fun.

We thought we would start with a well traveled small hike while we learn the area and acclaimate to the altitude... we got a little off course and came out of th woods 4 hours later! ... opps!  How did that happen :)  We talked with many people on the trail, took plenty of water breaks and had a great time!

------------

Thanks for sharing your adventure with us, Kiki!

If you have an adventure you would like to share with us, drop the Dog Blog a note: nlgahounds@gmail.com

Visiting Just Got Comfier!

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

We have a greyt crafty project to share with you today!  Brought to us by Day's Mom, Gilly!

Visiting family and friends with a newly adopted Greyhound, I've come to realize, isn't the easiest or most comfortable (according to Day anyhow) task to take on; it's for this very reason that we have instead become the regular 'Visitees' these days.

Don't get me wrong, I am more than happy to have people over and Day just goes beyond excitedly ecstatic in wait when he knows that he has company coming.....

"Are they here yet? Are they here yet??
Are they here yeeetttttt???"

A Word from Windy

Windy wants you all to know how nice it is to have her very own family to love!

Windy is adjusting very well to her new home and is comfortable taking treats from her familiar people.  She has even befriended a couple of greyhounds that live down the street.  Windy had a border collie visit and they spent some time in the yard.  The border collie's owner thought Nigel was quick and fast; after all, he is a herding dog.  But it turns out he was no match for the speed of Windy.  We hope to see Windy and her family at NLGA events in the near future.

Below are pictures with her two new best friends!!

Windy would like to encourage you to make a greyhound's wish of a forever family come true and give him or her a family and home of their own.  You won't be sorry!

Needle: Cold Weather Update

Hiya. Here's a brief update on Needle and how he's coping with the persistently cold weather we've "enjoyed" this winter.

His twice-daily hour-long walks have been a lot shorter since it started getting so cold in December, sometimes only a few minutes before he turns his tail (literally!) for home.

So, our boy has turned his attention to other pursuits. Well, one pursuit: food.

Tails From Home -- Ivanka

It is always fun to learn how our newly adopted greyhounds are doing in their new homes.  We received an update from Ivanka's new family.  She has been with her new family for almost 2 weeks now.

This is the update I received after 1 day (with a couple edits):
