NLGA Outings -- Calendar

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

Did everyone see the NLGA magnet that came in the mail with the annual sponsorship letter recently?  It has some really important information on it!  In addition the the NLGA website, phone number, animal poison control, and emergency vet phone numbers the magnet also has the lost dog phone number and the 2013 events schedule.

If you take a closer look at the 2013 events schedule you will notice that some of the events this year are greyhound friendly events and some are social events for people.  The next events on the schedule are the Harriet Brewing social event on April 20th and the Annual Meeting on May 3rd!  Watch for details on both of these events on the NLGA website in the near future!

We hope you will join us!

Foster Feature -- Chita

This is one handsome boy!!!

Chita will be 3 on May 15 and weighs about 80 pounds.  Chita recently retired after a year of racing in Council Bluff's, Iowa at Bluff's Run.  He ran in 31 races.  You can see his statistics on the Greyhound Data website: http://www.greyhound-data.com/breed.htm.

Chita is looking for a home without cats or other small critters.  He tries hard to be good around them, but he would be much happier if he didn't have to worry about them.

Chita with foster brother, Wrangler

Chita loves to lean and snuggle with his foster family.  He loves to go on walks in which he walks like a prefect gentleman, enjoys stuffies, eats well, and sleeps through the night in his crate. Chita is what his foster mom would call a "keeper". Chita is still waiting to find his family and his forever home.

Tails from Home -- Kappa

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

The dog blog mailbox got another 'Tails from Home' update...yeah!!  Today Kappa's family provided an update! Enjoy!

When we first brought Kappa home 3 months ago, she showed us little glimmers of her personality. We eagerly waited to see what she had in store for us!

She was very slow to learn the stairs! Took almost 2 weeks for her to do both up and down. But once she did, she would play upstairs out of our sight.  We first started hearing the rustle of that clompty clomp run back and forth, but could never manage to capture it on video.

She won't jump into the car without a treat...but has managed to identify the best bed in the house. (ours!) She loves carrots, prefers only bones from VonHansen, and fancies ultra fresh water. She doesn't care for long walks, wants to sleep in late and drools on all pillows.

She's shy at first, but ultimately has the sweetest most kind personality. Well, except if we wake her from her slumber.

She loves to carry around shoes, (thankfully not chew on them) and will hoard any and all toys in one area. She has demonstrated this not only at our house, but when visiting friends.

She loves to run at the dog park and is disappointed when no one will let her chase them. She especially loves to steal someone's tennis ball..run really far, really fast...and leave it.

She's a sweetie and we're so glad to have her in our family!

It's greyt to see her enjoying retirement!  Thanks so much for the update on Kappa!

Follow a Hound to Retirement -- Edition 010

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers...it's Max again!

I have some greyt news!  Two of our six 'follow a hound to retirement' greyhounds have recently retired!  They both are moving onto their next careers as pets!  I'm so excited for them both!

First up, Destiny!  Destiny took her final run around the track wearing the blue silks of box 2 on Thursday March 14th.  In the race she placed 7th.  As seen in her results chart below, a 7th place finish was her fourth race in a row placing below 4th place.  That means she graded out of racing.  Destiny ran more than 110 races during her racing career and is now beginning the journey of her next career...a retired racer and the life of a pet!  Unfortunately for NLGA, but fortunately for Destiny, she unexpectedly found her forever home in the days immediately following her retirement.  We all wish Destiny and her new family the very best...we enjoyed following her to retirement!

And Vincent!  All 92 pounds of this dark brindle boy sprinted around the track for a final time on Friday March 15th.  Vincent raced a Grade B race wearing the red silks out of box 1.  He set the pace and led the whole entire race; a box to wire win!  As we have seen before, winning his race would normally move him up to Grade A.  However, over the weekend his trainer noticed a small amount of swelling remaining in one of his legs and decided it would be best for big Vincent to retire happy and healthy rather than risking an injury in a future race.  Vincent has raced over 120 races in his long career and he ended his career in style with a final race win!  Vincent was retired on St. Patrick's Day.  He will be coming to NLGA to start his retirement as soon as we can finalize all of the arrangements.  We will continue to follow Vincent on his journey to retirement!

Keep your eyes on the NLGA Dog Blog for new posts with additional details on Vincent's retirement details and ways in which you can help!

Until next time,
~Max

Tails from Home -- Europol

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

Recently in our dog blog mailbox we got a 'Tails from Home' update from Europol's family!

Europol found his family at the end of November 2012.  His family reports that he is doing very well and is the most joyful greyhound they have ever met!  In addition to a few humans, his family includes another greyhound (Tabby) and a cat too.  Europol has a very thick and shiny black coat.  He loves car rides and can read the clock...a.k.a. he knows when it is time for that car ride!

His family was trying to get us a fabulous photo of sleek black Europol bounding through the snow...we have had plenty of snow for the opportunity lately...but Europol is simply too quick and always blurred in the photo attempts!  No problem, they were instead able to snap a picture of him doing what he spends a lot of his time doing.  And that's cuddling with Tabby!

Europol and Tabby

It's greyt to see him enjoying retirement!  Thanks so much for the update on Europol!

Foster Feature -- Cole Visits the Nursing Home

And boy was he tuckered out

On Sunday, Cole made his first trip to visit the residents at the nursing home.  He wasn't quite sure he wanted to be there and kept looking at the front door.  The other hounds were very welcoming and did a lot of sniffing.  Cole did very well for his first elevator ride--his ears perked up at the movement but he didn't make a sound.

Cole was a little apprehensive about all the strange people, but after a while he found two special people to rest his head in their lap.  He did very well with this first experience.  Cole will get another chance to meet people in a group setting this Sunday at the Pet Expo.  Stop by and see him!!
